The JavaScript community is completely preoccupied with performance. It's not that this isn't good, but are we dwelling too much on a single thing? Brian Lonsdorf thinks so, “We've got a problem. We have this perverse obsession with speed right now. When was the last time you saw a microbenchmark, was it in the last 24 hours?”

Is all the time we spend on language level optimization really worth the effort? What are the potential drawbacks to our “optimize each character” strategy? What are some bigger picture ideas worth giving more attention?

In his talk for Forward JS, Brian gives his two cents on performance, noting it's importance, while offering some advice on more efficient ways to spend our time.
