Doug Tangren's talk for NE Scala is about surface beauty, specifically, about the differences between what you see and what you get. He writes in his presentation summary, “How often do you think about how the JVM views the Scala source code you write? Have you ever wondered why your Scala method's signature is so hard to invoke from Java source code.” He discusses the differences between what we see, while looking at Scala source code, and what the JVM sees while interpreting it's compilation unit.
He says eloquently, “deducing certain truths about the beauty you see in the things that you make, only based on a narrow vantage point, can sometimes lead to mistakes or misjudgments.”
