Understanding the World Pixel by Pixel

The story here begins with the humble pixel. By itself, the pixel may not be very interesting, but bundled together, pixels are capable of some pretty amazing things. We can color them, make pretty pictures, and in the case of GeoTrellis, we can use pixels to format sets of extremely complicated geographic data.

GeoTrellis is a Scala library for fast, distributed processing and analysis of geographic raster data. Josh Marcus, one of the project's creators, discusses its beginnings, future, and many of the significant performance and scaling challenges experienced along the way. He also talks about why Scala & Akka were an excellent fit to bring it to life.
